Put out a take-me box

Fill a box with books and bits you no longer use, and leave it by your gate with a 'please take' sign.

Things you have finished with can start a small conversation with your street. Put books, games, kitchen bits or spare plant cuttings in a sturdy box, write 'free, please take' on the side, and leave it by your gate or on a wall on a dry day. Neighbours you have never spoken to will stop, browse and carry something home. Bring the box in at night, and top it up whenever something is ready to move on.
